Federal Government Social Policy Strategy

Monday 4/28

“Living Better” is based on the premise that the market alone is unable to generate decent living conditions for people, which is why action by the state is required, an equalizing action that will correct the terrible conditions of marginalization suffered by millions of Mexicans that deprives them of the opportunity for genuinely human development.

First. We will focus on the problem of providing adequate food and nutrition for those with least. That is why we will intensify actions to feed the most highly marginalized population.

Second. “Living Better” will increase people’s abilities to cope with life. That is why we increase skills by multiplying health services. The goal of this government is for all Mexicans, without reservations, to have a doctor, medicine and treatment guaranteed from before they are born to the time of their death.

A third line of action is to consolidate a network of social protection so that families can cope with contingencies without losing their savings or assets.

One. We must maintain stable economic conditions, because that is the best way of guaranteeing that workers have salaries with purchasing power and of enabling the poor to progress. When there are crises, those with least are the most severely affected.

Two. To achieve sustained economic growth, we must develop our people’s skills and take advantage of their potential.

Three. Work is the most effective way of emerging from poverty and the only means of steadily improving not only Mexicans’ standard of living but also the country’s economy.

Four. We are going to strengthen the internal market and economic growth to multiply the opportunities for employment and personal development.

Five. We begin with the premise that Living Better, in other words, public, social and economic policy must respect the environment.
